What this site is

GiftVerify Guide is an independent informational website that catalogues popular gift cards available in Canada — both prepaid Visa/Mastercard products (like Vanilla Gift Cards and the Canada Post Prepaid Mastercard) and major retailer cards (Walmart, Best Buy, Tim Hortons, Shoppers Drug Mart, Indigo, Loblaws/PC, and others).

For each card we cover, we provide a short description, the issuer's official balance-check URL, and a "Read guide" page with practical information about where the card is sold, how it works, and known limitations.

What this site is not

  • Not an issuer. We don't issue gift cards, sell them, or process transactions.
  • Not a balance-check service. We don't host any balance-check forms. Every "Check Balance" link goes to the issuer's own website.
  • Not affiliated with Visa, Mastercard, or any retailer brand listed. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
  • Not a financial advisor. Information here is general; verify current terms with the issuer before purchasing.

Why we built this

The internet is full of fake "balance check" sites that ask you to type in your gift card number, expiry, and security code — and then either steal the funds, harvest the card details, or both. Tens of millions of dollars in gift card fraud happen every year in North America alone.

We built GiftVerify Guide on a single principle: you should always check your gift card balance on the issuer's own website, not on a third-party form. So we made a directory that points you straight to the right place — and we deliberately do not host any balance-check forms ourselves, no matter how convenient that might seem.

The safest place to check a gift card balance is always the issuer's own website. Anything else risks exposing your card to a third party that has no business handling it.

How we choose which cards to list

We list gift cards based on three criteria:

  1. Availability in Canada. The card has to be widely sold or usable across Canadian retailers.
  2. Issuer transparency. The issuer must publish a balance-check page on its own domain so we can link there directly.
  3. Common need. Cards that lots of Canadians actually receive as gifts or buy for themselves.

We do not accept payment in exchange for adding a card to the directory or for moving it higher in any list. If a card meets the criteria, it gets added; if it doesn't, it doesn't.

Editorial standards

The descriptions and guides on this site are written by us. We aim for plain English, accurate facts, and honest assessments. When something we publish becomes outdated (an issuer changes its balance-check URL, for example), we update the page and note the date.

If you spot an error or omission, please email us — we read every message and correct mistakes promptly.

How this site is funded — affiliate disclosure

GiftVerify Guide is supported in two ways:

  • Display advertising. We may show ads served by Google AdSense or a similar network. Ads are clearly distinguishable from editorial content.
  • Affiliate links. Some outbound links to retailers may contain affiliate tracking that pays us a small commission if you make a qualifying purchase, at no additional cost to you.

Affiliate revenue, where it exists, does not influence which cards we list or how we describe them. We will mark affiliate links with rel="sponsored" per industry guidelines, and the same description and ranking criteria apply to cards regardless of whether a link earns us a commission.

In short: We make a small amount when readers click through and buy something. We never make money from your card details, and we never will — because we never collect them.

Who runs this site

GiftVerify Guide is operated by an independent publisher based in Canada. We are a small editorial project, not a corporation, and we don't have a customer-service line — for issues with a specific card, please contact the card's issuer directly. For questions about this site, see our Contact page.
