About the Starbucks gift card
Starbucks gift cards work at participating Starbucks Canada locations and through the Starbucks app for mobile orders. They're reloadable — you can keep adding funds — and they integrate with the Starbucks Rewards loyalty program if you register the card to your account.
Note: Canadian and U.S. Starbucks gift cards are interchangeable across borders in most cases, since Starbucks treats them as a single payment system, but the loyalty program is region-specific.
Where to buy
- starbucks.ca — physical cards mailed and digital eGift cards delivered by email instantly.
- Starbucks Canada locations — physical cards at the till.
- Major Canadian retailers — most grocery and pharmacy gift-card racks.
- Starbucks app — buy a card and add it directly to your account.
How to check your balance
The most convenient way to check balance is through the Starbucks app or at starbucks.ca/account:
- Open the Starbucks app and sign in.
- If you haven't yet, register the card by entering the 16-digit number and 8-digit security code from the back.
- Your card balance shows on the home screen.
You can also check the balance in any Starbucks Canada location by handing the card to a barista before ordering.
Using and reloading
Use the registered card by paying with the Starbucks app's QR code at the till — the cashier scans your phone. To reload, tap "Reload" in the app and add funds via credit card or another payment method. Auto-reload can be set up so the card refills automatically when the balance gets low.
Starbucks Rewards integration
Every dollar spent through a registered Starbucks card earns Stars. Stars can be redeemed for free drinks, food, and other rewards. Without a registered card, you don't earn Stars — even if the card itself has balance. Always register the card if you'll be using it regularly.
Common questions
Does the card expire?
Starbucks gift card balance does not expire under Canadian provincial law. Inactive cards may have small administrative requirements before reuse — check the cardholder agreement.
Can I use it for Starbucks merchandise (mugs, beans, gear)?
Generally yes — the gift card balance is good for almost anything sold in Starbucks Canada locations.
What if I lose a registered card?
If your card is registered to a Starbucks Rewards account, you can usually transfer the balance to a new card through customer service. Unregistered lost cards are generally unrecoverable — register cards as soon as you receive them.
